Student Intern — Western Research Institute is seeking an organized, detail-oriented and responsive individual for an internship in our Asphalt & Petroleum Technologies Business Unit.

Candidate will primarily deal with petroleum emulsions and/or organic synthesis analysis. Responsibilities include isolation of interfacial asphaltenes, selective chemical reaction and testing their resulting emulsion stability. Candidate may also participate in research on heat exchanger fouling and development activities associated with analyzing chemical properties and physical performance characteristics of petroleum products. Some duties include, but are not limited to, chemical synthesis, FTIR spectroscopy, titrations, glassware cleaning, data entry, sample preparation and helping with safety. Under the direction of the project manager or designee, the intern will perform sample testing and assist in data analysis for reporting requirements. Intern will also participate with team members in assessing solutions to testing issues.    

Position requires undergraduate or graduate training in chemistry or chemical engineering, working with a variety of solvents and wearing personal protective equipment (gloves and safety glasses). Laboratory research experience is required.
