Chemist/Scientist — Western Research Institute seeking a motivated and skilled individual with a good laboratory aptitude and flexibility in working hours to assist in the support of pilot plant research to develop a heavy oil upgrading technology.
Brief Description of Duties: Position requires a combination of knowledge of chemistry and good laboratory skills with desired knowledge of heavy oil and bitumen upgrading, or chemical/ hydrocarbon processing. The candidate will be a member of a research and development team and must work closely with both team members and industrial clients. Must be willing to learn as well as interact with other team members to solve problems as they are encountered.
The candidate is responsible to members of the senior analytical staff and will have a lead role in the analysis of samples collected from pilot plant operations using established ASTM and in-house developed analytical procedures. The candidate will assist in the analysis of hydrocarbon samples, recording the results, evaluating data quality, and providing the results in a useable form to senior technology development personnel. The candidate will be required to maintain a safe and clean laboratory and work area.
Minimum Qualifications: Position requires a bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a closely related discipline. Skills in both instrumental and wet chemical procedures are desirable. Three months to three years of analytical laboratory experience is desired, but not required. Position requires a good understanding of chemistry, good written and oral communication skills, and proficiency with computer applications including: word processing (Word), database (Excel), presentation (PowerPoint) and other graphic display and data treatment programs. Candidate must also be creative and enthusiastic, exude a positive attitude, and work as a team player. Shift work will be required and a valid Wyoming driver’s license is necessary.

Engineer/Senior Engineer — Western Research Institute (WRI), has an immediate opening for a a creative and enthusiastic individual to be part of a team dedicated to development of heavy oil and bitumen processing concepts.
Brief Description of Duties: Position requires a combination of experimental and processing knowledge with desired experience in heavy oil and bitumen upgrading, or chemical/ hydrocarbon processing. The candidate will be a member of a research and development team and must work closely with both team members and industrial clients. Must be willing to learn as well as interact with industrial clients to solve problems they are encountered.
The candidate is responsible to members of the senior research staff at WRI and will be an active participant in the execution of processing experiments; maintenance, modification and design of laboratory and pilot scale processing equipment. The candidate will assist in the collection of experimental data, evaluation of the data quality, and providing the results in a useable form to senior research personnel. The candidate will be encouraged to generate new ideas, processing concepts, and reactor upgrades. The candidate will team with others to develop and validate new processing concepts for hydrocarbons, petroleum, heavy oil and bitumen. The candidate will work with engineers and scientists at WRI on a project by project basis.
Minimum Qualifications: Position requires a bachelor’s degree in chemical/petroleum engineering or closely related engineering discipline and 3 months to 3 years of experience in chemical engineering. Position requires a reasonable level of mechanical skills, an understanding of process equipment, good written and oral communication skills, and proficiency with computer applications including database (Excel), presentation (MS PowerPoint) and other graphic display and data treatment programs. Candidate must also be creative and enthusiastic, exude a positive attitude, and work as a team player.
