Alternative Binders and Extenders - Bio-based

Algae, wood, cellulosic feedstocks or lignin can be converted into black, sticky and viscoelastic materials suitable for asphalt materials. WRI’s process uses renewable vegetable oil-based solvents to produce new bio-based asphalt materials. These solvents can be substituted by those produced from the petrochemical industry. However, by using bio-based solvents and waste biomass, new 100% bio-binder materials can be produced that will store vast amounts of CO2 into pavements. WRI’s process can be tuned to produce stiffer or softer materials from the same feedstock.
