WRI’s Renewable upcycling, carbon Materials and Asphalt Technologies (RenuMAT), formerly the Asphalt and Petroleum Technology (APT) group is a leader in asphalt, petroleum, coal and hydrocarbon research. The group has several decades of experience leading research at the federal level to characterize, diagnose and predict asphalt and heavy oil properties and performance, and thermal processing of heavy oils.

Western Research Institute (WRI), located in Laramie, Wyoming, is a multi-million dollar, not-for-profit, research organization renowned for work in advanced energy systems, environmental technologies and highway materials research and technologies.
Carbon foams are light weight flame resistant materials which can be engineered with a variety of properties. Their density, insulating/conductive properties, and strength, to mention a few, can be tuned by using various materials, blends and processing conditions. Carbon foams can also be easily machined into a variety of shapes making them useful for incorporation into composites and other material applications.
