WRI’s assembled research consortium with industry partners contains a catalogue of both physical and chemical properties of over 100 relevant asphalt binders. These properties have been assembled in a database and binder structural and phenomenological models are created to predict physical properties. As new industry partners join the consortium or current members add more samples, the database is continually expanded and the accuracy of the predictive models increase.
Asphalt boundaries are expanding with “novel” binders such as visbroken, airblown, blends, and new additives. These binders tend not to fall neatly within the rheological specifications or traditional chemical binder classifications creating a need for new types of analysis. AIRC includes many of these “novel” binders in the database and is working to fit them into the predictive models.
