The Heavy Oil Technology Center team provides expertise in design, scale up and operation of process development and pilot plant scale units. As an example, the team has successfully advanced MEG Energy’s HI-Q® technology from the conceptual design through a 1 bbl/day process development unit and on to a 5 - 10 bbl/day pilot plant. The team was also involved in incorporating the study findings into the development and design of a commercial demonstration unit. Experience in the following pilot scale development and operation:

  • Partial upgrading

  • Heavy oil thermal conversion

  • Solvent deasphalting

  • Diluent recovery

  • Asphaltene recovery and handling

Our pilot and demo-scale plant developments are performed with both a safety oriented and process simplification approach, while striving to achieve maximum operating efficiency. Our team is adept at incorporating multiple design concepts, along with developing possible future modifications.

Pilot plant development opportunities:

  • Process design

  • Design implementation

  • Data generation and collection

  • Safe and efficient pilot operation

Our team is able to aid in developing your technology from a conceptual design through pilot plant development and operation. All designs and developments undergo a comprehensive evaluation, including HAZOPs, to ensure safe operation and advancements.
